3.Boyfriend trousers. These share many elements of and fit like a pair of boyfriend jeans. They sit lower on the waist and have a relaxed, straight fit from the hip to the cuff. Unlike high-waist trousers, the fabric that I believe works best here is either a wool blend with slight stretch or a heavier 100 percent wool for cooler months. Both are fantastic because they are heavy and do not hug the low hips, or the “ears” of a woman’s body, as I call them. They are flattering and comfortable, two great self-esteem boosters. I know that any time I’m not feeling my best and I’m focusing on my insecurities, great things rarely happen. Conversely, when I embrace and emit positivity, good things seem to flow my way much more easily. A pair of wool-blend boyfriend trousers are an addicting conduit to this look-good, feel-good mind-set.

JEWELRY

Wearing a variety of jewelry is an easy way of expressing your personality in the workplace. I usually choose my outfit first and accent it with accessories that complement it, but I make exceptions for truly special pieces of jewelry. When I have a statement piece I adore, I dress around the jewelry by building my outfit around that item. For example, I adore grand-scale necklaces. I’ll wear them to upgrade a uniform outfit or a tee and denim, elevate a turtleneck, and offer some life peeking out from under a trench. The wardrobe upgrade options are endless.

I also aim to let my earrings express my personality. I like to look for different pairs of studs, ear jackets, and ear crawlers in my jewelry box and choose ones that weren’t meant to go as a pair but, when put together, tell a story for that day. I also like to let large-scale earrings tell a different type of style story, though they are usually saved for evening events, since I don’t want them to be too heavy or uncomfortable and distracting at the office unless they are fun, light costume clip-ons.

Over the years, Bea Valdes, my go-to large-scale jewelry designer, has given me invaluable tips and advice when it comes to selecting the right accessories. I appreciate that her pieces work in a way that can look polished and chic on a casual weekend or can be worn to somewhere special as a major moment. Bea and I both believe that a statement necklace not only makes a statement in jewelry, but also creates a statement about who the woman wearing the jewelry is. It should be consistent with your personal style. Our goals, confidence, and sense of self are expressed not only in what we say each day, but also in our posture and clothing choices, and extend through our jewelry choices. To me, that is another tremendous way to tell the world how to perceive and feel about us without ever having to open our mouths or utter a word. At the end of the day, style is all about telling the story of who you are and who you want to be in the world.
